How this calculator works

General damages compensate the pain, suffering and loss of amenity caused by the injury — judges use the Judicial College Guidelines (JCG) to keep awards consistent. Special damages compensate financial losses — past and future loss of earnings, care, treatment, equipment and accommodation.
